new conversation

Yesterday Shannon & Steve recorded a 39 minute discussion of Motivating Students to Learn written by Jere Brophy. You don't need to have listened, and commented, on this conversation until December 5th. However, I'm providing this conversation as an early download for those who might find it useful to have early access to this audio.

three conversations

I've just posted three new book conversations. Please listen, and comment, about each of these conversations before our next class sessions. Here's the details:
  1. Bianca & Kristina discuss Motivation and Self-Regulated Learning edited by Schunk & Zimmerman.

  2. Debrayh & Mary discuss Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Csikszentmihalyi.

  3. Dionne & Terry discuss Self-Efficacy: The Exercise of Control by Bandura.
I know I'm looking forward to hearing each of these (especially if it starts raining this weekend). Check them all out (and leave a comment for Kimi & Amy if you haven't done so already) at:

assignment re-alignment

A lot of new blog entries have been posted. In addition, we’ll be listening to a fair number of book conversations over the next seven weeks. In order to make sure things don’t get too hectic, I wanted to announce some changes and some reminders:
  1. The learning materials for Sessions 8 and 9 (anxiety and the self) are optional only learning materials. They are not required. This means all of the required learning materials for the last two class sessions will be student-generated.

  2. Britte Cheng will begin responding to the flow article questions pretty soon. Remember the deadline for posting a comment is November 5th, and the last day she’ll post a response is November 7th.

  3. Dale Schunk will respond to questions about the self-regulation article between November 5th and November 13th. In turn make sure to start reading the article relatively soon so not everyone is posting a question at the tail end of Dale's visit with us.

  4. There will be 3 book conversations posted around November 8th that need to be listened to by November 21.

  5. There will be 3 final book conversations posted around November 21st that will need to be listened to by December 5.
In addition, group blog posts will continue to emerge. Work around whatever is the best schedule for you to read and comment on the various group blog posts.

conversation one & next assignments

I've just posted the conversation Kimi and Amy conducted yesterday about Stipek's book Motivation to Learn. This is required listening.

For our next class session on Goals you'll need to:
  1. Listen to the Goals audiobook
  2. Listen to the Amy & Kimi conversation
  3. Post at least one comment or question for Amy & Kimi regarding their conversation
  4. Post one question for Britte Cheng about the Rathunde & Csikszentmihalyi article
This is also an excellent point in the semester to begin exploring what the various other blog groups have been posting. Make sure to leave them a comment so they know you've visited. Questions posed to them are even better!

conversations update

The table below provides the most current information I have regarding the audio recording of the various book conversations. Notice that this version of the table includes both a recording date plus a listening date. The "listening date" is the deadline for people to, well, listen to each conversation. As the table indicates, there will be one audio conversation to listen to before the November 7th class, three before the November 21st class, and a final three before our December 5th class.

Please feel free to ask me questions of any sort about these conversations as you get closer to your recording date.

book conversation recording sessions

You can now sign up for a recording date for doing your book conversation. The table below shows the 7 groups and also their reserved recording times (this table will be updated regularly). The first recordings can take place on October 10th and the last needs to take place by November 22nd.

If you want to record on a teaching weekend, then you can do so on Friday afternoons with a start time no later than 4. You can also record between 11 and 1 on teaching Saturdays. You can also record at my office on afternoons between teaching weekends. If you want to record somewhere besides my office, let me know so we can see if it makes sense to arrange a recording setup for you.

Use the commenting feature to propose recording times. I'll confirm by creating a response comment and by updating the table.

book pairs & blog groups

I've now heard from everyone about book readings and blog groups. The book project is very cleanly settled (see table below). On the other hand, we have two blog groups of two people, and three other groups with 3 or more persons. I may leave this as is, or may try to join groups. I just need to think it over for a few days. All these signups happened much quicker than I expected!

early signups

You have until September 9th to identify and commit to a book that you'll read with one other student in the class. Likewise you have until September 11th to commit to one of the student blog groups. So, why am I allowing people to start to sign up for book pairs or blog groups now? Because, based on experience, I know some students have ants in their pants (that's the technical term).

There's no need to sign up for either until after our August 23rd class session. However, you are also welcome to do early signups if you wish. Books are likely easier to sign up for, blog groups you may want more information that I'll present in class.

Head on over to the Books section to learn more about the book conversation project. Check out the Blogs section to learn more about the group blog project. After you've learned about each, you can then choose to do early signups. Just use the relevant links under "assignments" in the sidebar.
